Cathay Pacific Airways and its subsidiary Hong Kong Express is increasing flights to Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok, 3 of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations.

According to Cathay Pacific Chairman Patrick Healy, the number of daily flights between Hong Kong and Bangkok will be increased from 2 to 4 flights daily starting next month.

According to Healy, the airline will resume service between Hong Kong and Chiang Mai in January.

Healy added that better connectivity would contribute to Hong Kong’s efforts to forge stronger relations with other countries.

“It is our responsibility to link Hong Kong to the world and the world to Hong Kong. And this is why we are working to increase the number of flights as soon as we can.”

The increase in flight frequency is the result of an internal statement made by Cathay’s CEO, Augustus Tang Kin-wing, who informed employees to anticipate a 3.3% wage increase.

For the past 2 years, Hong Kong’s flag carrier suffered severe losses, as did every other airline in the world.  Cathay Pacific posted a loss of $636.8 million in the first half of 2022, which is substantially better than the airline’s losses during the same time in 2021.

According to chairman Patrick Healy, Cathay Pacific is dedicated to developing Hong Kong into a “global aviation hub”.

In 2020, the firm lost 8,400 jobs due to the closure of Cathay Dragon, Cathay’s regional airline. The airline is now focused on rehiring former employees and hiring new pilots and cabin crew.
