According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thailand anticipates its one-millionth foreign tourist this year to arrive by the end of May. Since the Test & Go program and other entry restrictions were abolished this month, visitors have increased dramatically. However, the present tourist number is still far from pre-pandemic levels.
Before the pandemic, roughly 110,000 visitors per day visited Thailand, or approximately 3.3 million per month. Therefore, Thailand has a long way to go before foreign visitors return to pre-Covid levels.
If Thailand Pass is abolished on June 1, traveling to Thailand will need much less paperwork. Currently, travelers are asked to submit their vaccination records and evidence of Covid-19 insurance of $10,000. On the other hand, unvaccinated travelers must present evidence of a negative RT-PCR test result conducted within 72 hours before entering the country. Thailand Pass is likely the most significant obstacle to Thailand’s tourism sector recovery.
Thailand might attract more international visitors by classifying Covid-19 as an endemic, but this will depend on how the government defines an endemic. Anutin Charnvirakul, Thailand’s Minister of Health, said last week that tourists must continue to wear face masks even if Thailand classifies Covid-19 as an endemic. Thailand’s mandatory wearing of a mask is found unattractive to some potential foreign tourists considering that many countries don’t require to wear face masks.
