Chinese tourists in Thailand

The Thai tourism industry is expecting more Chinese visitors in October.

Starting October 1, China National Day celebrates the foundation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.  From October 1 to 7, China celebrates a seven-day Golden Week holiday.

Vichit Prakobgosol, VP of the Tourism Council of Thailand said that once the Thai government completely reopen the country by the next quarter, the country would still have a chance to attract at least 5 million foreign visitors before the year-end.

He emphasized that an early fully reopened Thailand can be more competitive as a world tourist destination. In addition, once China eased its overseas travel restriction for its residents in the last quarter, the total number of foreign visitors visiting the country could reach up to 8 million.

Vichit predicted that Thailand will recover 70% of its before pandemic numbers in 2023 and 100% in 2024.

However, in the aftermath of the pandemic, many travel firms have been unable to reopen because of financial difficulties. He noted that visitors have begun coming in smaller groups, partaking in more tourism programs, and relaxing activities. They spend most of the time on hotel grounds.

These changes in travel patterns provide further issues for tour operators whose business models are centered on big groups and organized activities, as well as suburban dining and shopping.
