Koh Kradan, an idyllic island in Thailand’s Trang province, has experienced a sixfold increase in tourism since being named the ‘Best Beach on Earth’ by the UK-based World Beach Guide. With over 2,000 visitors arriving daily, up from the previous average of 300, the island is rapidly becoming a must-visit destination for beach lovers and travelers alike.

There are currently seven resorts on the island, offering a total of 168 rooms, including the Seven Seas Resort, Reef Resort, Mali Resort, Kalume Resort, Koh Kradan Beach Resort, Ao-nieng Beach Resort, and Paradise Lost Bungalows. During the recent Songkran festival, all accommodations on the island were fully booked.

As Koh Kradan gains global attention, the Ministry of Tourism is working closely with the Ministry of Resources and the Ministry of Interior to develop the island as an ecotourism hotspot, while ensuring that its natural beauty remains unharmed. The majority of visitors to the island are international travelers, with 60% hailing from European and Scandinavian countries, typically staying for 3-5 nights.

Koh Kradan’s appeal lies in its serene atmosphere, which sets it apart from other crowded tourist destinations in Thailand such as Koh Phi Phi or Phuket. The island is also part of the Hat Chao Mai National Park and has no local villages or inhabitants, giving it a secluded and peaceful ambiance.

However, if tourism continues to grow beyond the island’s capacity, the government may consider implementing restrictions on the number of daily visitors, similar to the approach taken at Maya Bay following its rise to fame after the movie The Beach (2000).

Thailand’s tourism authorities have shown a commitment to preserving the environment by temporarily closing popular destinations for rehabilitation, such as the Similan Islands. These islands are scheduled to be closed during the monsoon season and will reopen on October 15, 2023, allowing nature to recover from the busy high season.

For travelers seeking an unparalleled beach experience, Koh Kradan offers pristine shores and crystal-clear waters that have earned it the top spot among global beach destinations. As the island continues to draw visitors from around the world, sustainable tourism practices will be crucial in preserving its breathtaking beauty for future generations to enjoy.
