Thailand is making big waves internationally, as five of its cities have earned the title of ‘Creative Cities’ by UNESCO. These cities are being celebrated for their fantastic work in food, arts, crafts, and design.

Anucha Burapachaisri, the government spokesperson, shared this global recognition. He stressed how important Thailand’s creative people and the country’s unique cultural history are to these cities.

In 2015, Phuket became the first Thai city to earn the label of UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. The island’s food business makes a whopping $3.6 billion a year. The city’s love for preserving and promoting traditional foods, which are deeply part of the local culture and have been passed down through generations, is why UNESCO gave them this honor.

Three years later, in 2018, UNESCO named Chiang Mai a Creative City. Known for its stunning crafts and folk arts, the province is famous for its beautiful wood crafts, ceramics, niello, and silverware.

In 2019, UNESCO named Bangkok, the bustling capital, a Creative City in design. What makes Bangkok special is its blend of old and new designs. This mix showcases the diversity of the city’s people and the city’s growing design field.

Sukhothai, much like Chiang Mai, was also named a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art. The province boasts a strong community of over 1,300 craftspeople who work in various local industries. Their talents span from textile weaving and pottery to gold and silver crafting and Sangkhalok ceramics.

Lastly, Phetchaburi also earned the title of UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. The region is known for its variety of environments and traditional community cooking. This honor shows Phetchaburi’s dedication to preserving its food culture and nature through traditional community meals.

These honors from UNESCO celebrate the bright creativity and cultural heritage of Thailand and highlight these cities as centers for cultural tourism. They promise a future where the world can see and value what Thailand has to offer.

It’s important to mention that the Thailand Elite Visa makes it easier than ever to experience Thailand’s rich culture and creativity. This visa lets you live in Thailand for a long time, so you can fully experience the colorful life of Thailand’s cities and the unique traditions that UNESCO has recognized.
