The Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) has proposed a ‘One Night, One Dollar’ campaign to entice tourists back to Phuket.

Foreign visitors to the island would book lodgings for as little as $1 a night under the proposal. Usually, the accommodations would cost between 1,000 and 3,000 baht per night, with the government subsidizing the remainder of the cost.

If the campaign is effective, it can generate 40 billion baht for Phuket’s hotels throughout July.

Online travel agencies and big wholesalers are informed about the initiative, which is likely to receive formal approval later this month from the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, and the cabinet.

If the ‘One Night, One Dollar’ marketing is effective in Phuket, it may be expanded to other places later this year, including Pattaya, Koh Samui, and Bangkok.

The news comes as Phuket prepares to reopen to fully vaccinated foreign tourists on July 1.

Phuket’s reopening is subject to 70% of the island’s population inoculation against COVID-19.

Phuket governor Narong Woonciew said that the island is on track to meet its vaccination target, with 50% of the island already inoculated.

Mr. Narong stated that if all registered individuals are vaccinated as planned, 65% of the island’s population will get inoculated.

A vaccination drive will invite the remaining people to get vaccinated in the next two weeks.
