In a late-night order that came out around 10 p.m. on June 23, 2022, the Thai government decided to drop the mandatory wearing of face masks in public.

Before the law was changed, people had to wear masks at all times.

Here is a summary, not a word-for-word translation, of what the legal order in the Royal Gazette says:

The Ministry of Public Health has decided that wearing face mask or cloth mask as voluntary.

It is advised, but not required, to wear one in crowded places or places where there isn’t enough airflow.

People who are more likely to get Covid-19, like the elderly, have health issues, or are at risk, should always wear a mask that fits right. But this is not “required.”

The order is signed by Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha and effective immediately.

Businesses and event venues have the right to require people to wear masks in their places and at their events.
