phuket reopening

Thailand government has announced its intention to reopen the country to international tourists on July 1st, beginning with Phuket province as a trial location employing the Phuket Sandbox model. COVID-19 vaccines are currently being distributed to the residents of Phuket in an effort to re-establish tourist confidence.

Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Minister of Tourism and Sports, has asked the Phuket administration to meet the vaccine target next month. The provincial government and corporate sector have devised strategies to prepare for the reopening in every way possible, while also increasing public knowledge and understanding. As a result, the reopening will be safe and will contribute to the economy’s growth.

The island province, however, is closed to travelers from countries where COVID-19 is prevalent, as well as to those without a valid vaccination certificate. Nevertheless, once the Phuket Sandbox model is operational, it is projected that tourist arrivals would increase significantly.

In order to assist in limiting the spread of COVID-19 in Phuket, guests arriving by air must present documentation indicating that they have received both COVID-19 vaccine doses. Also, they must undergo rapid antigen testing or reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests in their country of origin, as well as register on gophuget.com and the MorChana app available in App Store and Google Play.

Visitors arriving via land transport were also subject to the same requirements. Individuals who do not have a vaccination certificate or have not performed a swab test will be subject to a 14-day quarantine. If they want to stay in Phuket for less than three days, they must remain in home quarantine for those three days monitored by EOC staff.  If they violated the guidelines and contributed to the virus’s spread, they will face charges under the Communicable Disease Act.

Today, the measures take effect.
