TAT Assures High Quality Care For Tourists Under Quarantine In Hospitels

A British journalist highlighted issues with facilities and guest service within his 2-week stay within a ‘hospitel’ in Phuket.  He added concerns about insufficient COVID-19 prevention efforts. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the care and service for COVID-19 positive guests staying in hospitels strictly follows public health guidelines.

The director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Phuket office, Nanthasiri Ronnasiri, explained the activity depicted in the photograph that supports the British journalist’s article stating that certain activities are permitted in hospitels to allow quarantined guests to reduce stress. However, her office will consult with appropriate authorities and hospitels in Phuket to determine the sorts of activities that are permitted. Additionally, hospitels will be requested to schedule daily activities in advance.

According to Weerasak Lorthongkham, director of Vachira Phuket Hospital, infected individuals in Phuket are treated in hospital, hospitel, hotel room isolation, and other hotel isolation methods. He claimed that quarantine in hotels was not equivalent to imprisonment. Dr. Weerasak stated that persons under quarantine in hotels are still permitted to engage in leisure activities.  However, their activity will be closely monitored by public health staff.

Bhummikitti Ruktaengam, head of the Phuket Tourist Association, said visitors in quarantine hotels are permitted to leave their rooms to reduce stress. He added that an agreement would need to be reached on what activities guests do within the hotel. According to Mr. Bhummikitti, difficulties with substandard facilities and services are issues in a few hospitels and the association will continue to monitor hospitels that are in question.
