Good news for Thailand’s tourism sector!  China Southern Airlines announced that it will resume flights to Bangkok.

More than 12 million Chinese tourists visited Thailand in 2019, accounting for a quarter of all international arrivals. The number of tourists visiting Thailand gradually increased from 2016 (8.76 million) to 2019 (12 million). However, COVID-19 disrupted the growth and border restrictions prevented foreigners from visiting Thailand.

China Southern Airlines said it will return service to Bangkok, Tokyo, Jakarta, Dubai, and Manila.  Also, the airline company announced on Weibo that starting October 30 they will run 108 international flights every week.

The news will be a sigh of relief for both Thailand and Chinese tourists who have been unable to travel for over 3 years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In his opening address at China’s 20th Party Congress in Beijing on Sunday, President Xi Jinping announced that the mainland remains committed to a zero-Covid policy. However, there seems to be a reduction in border restrictions.

In June, China reduced the quarantine period for hotel guests to 7 days and additional 3 days at home.

China Southern Airlines shares increased by 3.6% in Hong Kong on Tuesday morning, while China Eastern and Air China shares climbed to 5.6% and 5.1%, respectively. The value of Beijing Capital International Airport Company increased by 3.1%.

According to flight data provider, VariFlight, flights into and out of China are still around 95% and remained below pre-pandemic levels.
