The Thai government is pleased with its decision to reduce entry restrictions, which, according to authorities, has improved tourism in provinces like Phuket and Koh Samui.

“All of this results from the government’s decision to loosen travel restrictions during the country’s peak season (March to May).”

Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, the government spokesperson, said that up to 10,000 foreign tourists visit the country daily.  However, large tour groups are missed for the time being. Tourists visiting Thailand prefer traveling in small groups.

Phuket received 150,596 visitors for the weekend of May 13-16, which is estimated to produce 1.82 billion baht in tourism income. The occupancy rate in the province on extended vacations was 44.46%.

Thanakorn expects the occupancy rate to rise from 60 to 80%, especially in famous areas like Phuket Old Town and Patong Beach. On Koh Phang Ngan and Koh Samui, tourists come for the renowned Full Moon Party, supporting the province’s economy.

Thanakorn reports that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed the police and agencies involved in tourist areas to ensure the safety of both Thai and international tourists.

The prime minister also urged Thais to maintain a positive image in the tourist industry to promote the economy and generate income for Thailand.
