Han Zhiqiang, China’s ambassador to Thailand, expects the number of Chinese tourists coming to Thailand in April to exceed 300,000, significantly boosting the country’s tourism sector.

At a recent session with Phuket Governor Narong Woonciew, the ambassador discussed methods for strengthening connections between China and Thailand as well as boosting tourism to Phuket and beyond. On the agenda of the discussion were Thailand’s desire to host the Specialized Expo in 2028, the province’s plans to develop sister towns in China, and initiatives for promoting tourism between the two countries.

Since China removed its travel restrictions in January, Phuket has become a renowned tourist destination, with a daily average arrival of 20,000 Chinese visitors.

In cooperation with the private sector, Phuket’s Provincial Administrative Organization plans to conduct a roadshow in Shanghai,  Nanning, and Chengdu to boost tourism. Some Chinese cities, including Yantai, Hainan, Ningxia Hui, Guilin, Yanjiang, Xiamen, and the special administrative region of Macau, have previously built tourism alliances with the southern province.

According to Thai officials, the Chinese ambassador’s visit marks a notable development for Phuket’s tourism industry, which has seen an immense boost in Chinese tourist arrivals since the removal of travel restrictions. A planned roadshow in China is expected to further enhance Phuket’s appeal to Chinese tourists.
