With Covid-19 expected to be declared as an endemic disease next month, hospitels and alternative quarantine locations have resumed regular hotel services.

Hospitels are hotels that provide accommodations to those with moderate Covid symptoms. During the peak of the pandemic, they helped alleviate pressure on the hospitals in the country. Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun, vice president of the Thai Hotels Association said that such service is no longer needed.

Hotels that rely on Chinese tourists for revenue were affected the worst. Since most businesses regain their footing, staff shortages could be a problem, as a lot of experienced staff already left the hotel industry.

The change from hotel to hospitel helped hotels to generate income when tourism was hit hard by strict restrictions in the country. Now that Thailand eased its restrictions and borders are opening, hotels may resume regular operations, just in time for the peak season in October of this year. A comprehensive maintenance and cleaning operation is already in progress.

During the last 6 months of the alternative quarantine program, 128 Thai companies opted for alternate quarantine services to welcome both guests, such as those attending meetings and seminars. The Department of Health Service Support announced the shutdown of all alternative quarantine sites last month.

Following the relaxation of some Covid restrictions on May 1, the number of people arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport who were required to remain in AQ accommodations decreased to 30 per day, this is a 95% decrease from 600-700 per day in the second half of 2021.
